UNESCO has just had an offical medal struck to commemorate the thousandth anniversary of the birth of the great physician, scholar and philosopher of the Islamic World, AVICENNA, born in the year 370 of the Hegira (980 A.D.) in Afshana near Dukhara. This medal is the work of the sculptor-medallist Victor Douek, specialist in Arabic calligraphy. The obverse is inspired by a miniature appearing in a seventeeth century Turkish manuscript ; the reverse side reproduces a thought of Avicenna.

The Indonesian Buddhist temple of Borodubur is honoured by a UNESCO medal, sales of which will help save this 1,200 year old monument, one of the largest and famous monuments of the world. It is to be dismantled and its foundation consolidated, and UNESCO has launched an international appeal for contributions to undertake the necessary restoration. This medal was designed by Josaku Maeda, a Japanese artist, modelled by Georges Simon of France, and struck at the Monnaie de Paris, the french mint.

The "Machu Picchu Medal" minted by UNESCO is the work of the well-known Peruvian sculptor, Alberto Guzmán. The averse of the medal shows - in bas relief - the landscape of Machu Picchu and the inscription "Machu Picchu - UNESCO 1979". The obverse presents, in the centre of a geometrical design of the sun, the "Intihuatana" or sundial stone, "the place to which the sun is tied. It was here, at the winter solstice, that the Inca astronomer-high priest "tied up" the sun ostensibly to prevent its departure, in reality to mark the start of its return.

The Machu Picchu Medal minted by UNESCO is the work of the well-known Peruvian sculptor, Alberto Guzman. The averse of the medal shows - in bas relief - the landscape of Machu Picchu and the inscription Machu Picchu - UNESCO 1979. The obverse presents in the centre of a geometrical design of the sun the Intihuatana or sundial stone the place to which the sun is tied. It was here at the winter solstice that the Inca astronomer high priest tied up the sun ostensibly to prevent its departure in reality to mark the start of its return.

English transcription: The Carthage medal is the fourth official UNESCO medal brought out in the International Saveguarding of monuments and historical and cultural sites in peril. The front of the medal shows the face of a woman of Carthage after a Roman mosaic and the back a scene depicting the Horseman of Douimes taken from a punic coin - thus illustrating two important cultures which influenced the history of Carthage.
French transcription: La médaille Carthage est la quatrième médaille officielle de l'UNESCO éditée dans le cadre du programme international pour la sauvegarde des monuments et sites historiques et culturels en péril. L'avers de la médaille représente le visage de la Dame de Carthage, d'après une mosaïque romaine et le revers, une scène en relief représentant le Cavalier de Douimes d'après une pièce de monnaie punique - illustrant ainsi deux grandes influences culturelles qui ont déterminé l'histoire de Carthage.
