English transcription: Official UNESCO medal, Machu Picchu (Peru) - the "lost city" of the Incas. The "Machu Picchu Medal" minted by UNESCO is the work of the well-known Peruvian sculptor, Alberto Guzmán. The averse of the medal shows - in bas relief - the landscape of Machu Picchu and the inscription "Machu Picchu - UNESCO 1979". The obverse presents, in the centre of a geometrical design of the sun, the "Intihuatana" or sundial stone, "the place to which the sun is tied. It was here, at the winter solstice, that the Inca astronomer-high priest "tied up" the sun ostensibly to prevent its departure, in reality to mark the start of its return.
