Scope and content

English transcription: At the request of the Governments of Algeria and Tunisia, a study of the ground water resources of the Northern Sahara was undertaken by UNESCO, acting as the executing agency for the United Nations Development Programme. According to the experts, this immense territory of 500,000 sq. miles contains sufficient underground water to guarantee the agricultural development of double the existing irrigated lands which could conceivably create 20,000 to 30,000 new jobs by the year 2000. Date palms, dotted around underground water resources near Timimoun provide the principal culture of this region.
