In an effort to alleviate the destructive effects of earthquakes, the United Nations Development Programme, with UNESCO acting as executing Agency, is assisting the Japanese Government in the expansion of the International Institute of Seismology and Earthquake Engineering. The purpose of this project is to further develop the training programme for specialists as well as the advisory services offered to developing countries located in the seismic zones of the world. Study and research is continually being done to determine which building materials have the properties best able to withstand earthquake shocks. Here a student is testing various types of materials.

Afin de lutter plus efficacement contre les effets des tremblements de terre, le Programme des Nations Unies pour le Développement - dont l'UNESCO est l'agent d'exécution - a conclu un accord avec le Gouvernement japonais pour l'expansion de l'Institut International de Sismologie et de Génie parasismique. Le but de ce projet est de développer le programme de formation de spécialistes en sismologie et de fournir l'assistance technique nécessaire aux pays en voie de développement situés dans les zones sismiques de notre globe. As a result of extensive research, new techniques have been developed which increase the toughness of the buildings in resisting earthquake attacks and thus now allow the construction of tall buildings like this new World Trade Centre.
