Ce symbole a été créé pour l'UNESCO par le graphiste belge Michel Olyff, dont le concours a été obtenu par l'intermédiaire du Conseil international d'associations graphiques (ICOGRADA). Les deux hommes qui se donnent la main symbolisent la coopération internationale par le livre, tandis que la position bien assurée de leurs corps traduit l'importance des livres dans le développement national.
