Travelling 1.000 kilometres (600 miles), a car consumes as much oxygen as a human being does in a year, and in addition to lethal carbon monoxide, it emits annually about one kilogramme of lead. Another problem created by the proliferation of motor vehicules is how to dispose of wrecked and worn-out hulks. Increasingly they pile up in hideous cemeteries which blight the countryside as here at Genevilliers.

English transcription: Year by year Venice is slowly falling into decay as it sinks into the mud of its lagoon. Many of the buildings are falling into ruins, simply because they are uninhabited. Venice's heritage is threatened by storms which are causing more and more flooding in the city. Swift currents eat at the city's foundation. Humidity and air pollution are causing paintings and the city's marble to deteriorate. UNESCO, on 2 December 1966, launched a campaign for the saving of Venice and has commenced a large-scale study of the Venetian problem as a whole. Here, a canal polluted by detergents.
