English transcription: The Acropolis is in peril. Deterioration is due to a variety of causes air pollution, dilatation of extraneous materials used during previous restoration work, problems of the stability of the monuments and the rock platform itself, wear and tear caused by tourists. A number of urgent measures are going to be taken and an international campaign to save the Acropolis was launched on 10 January 1977 with an appeal by Mr. Amadou-Mahtar M'Bow, Director-General of UNESCO. Iron bars which where inserted at the beginning of this century to consolidate monuments, have helped to cause fissures in the marbles through which humidity enters and rusts the metallic supports.
