English transcription: The special concert held today in the Salle Pleyel in celebration of United Nations Day was part of an international broadcast heard simultaneously on four continents. The concert combined performances by world-famous soloists and orchestras playing in New York, Paris and Geneva. The Salle Pleyel concert was a highlight of the Semaines Musicales de Paris a five-week festival organized by the International Music Council under the auspices of UNESCO. Seen here just before the concert in the Salle Pleyel are two of the participants violonists David Oistrakh (USSR) at left and Yehudi Menuhin (USA). During the concert Mr Menuhin and Mr Oistrakh performed Bach's Double Violin Concerto in D Minor with the Orchestre de Chambre de la Radiodiffusion-Television Française conducted by Pierre Capdevielle.

UNESCO has just had an offical medal struck to commemorate the thousandth anniversary of the birth of the great physician, scholar and philosopher of the Islamic World, AVICENNA, born in the year 370 of the Hegira (980 A.D.) in Afshana near Dukhara. This medal is the work of the sculptor-medallist Victor Douek, specialist in Arabic calligraphy. The obverse is inspired by a miniature appearing in a seventeeth century Turkish manuscript ; the reverse side reproduces a thought of Avicenna.

The Machu Picchu Medal minted by UNESCO is the work of the well-known Peruvian sculptor, Alberto Guzman. The averse of the medal shows - in bas relief - the landscape of Machu Picchu and the inscription Machu Picchu - UNESCO 1979. The obverse presents in the centre of a geometrical design of the sun the Intihuatana or sundial stone the place to which the sun is tied. It was here at the winter solstice that the Inca astronomer high priest tied up the sun ostensibly to prevent its departure in reality to mark the start of its return.

The obverse presents, in the centre of a geometrical design of the sun, the "Intihuatana" or sundial stone, "the place to which the sun is tied. It was here, at the winter solstice, that the Inca astronomer-high priest "tied up" the sun ostensibly to prevent its departure, in reality to mark the start of its return.

The U.S. National Commission fo UNESCO met at Hunter College, New York City, January 26-27, just prior to the Commission's Third National Conference, which opened at Hunter College on the evening of January 27. Outstanding among the matters considered by the Commission members in their two-day meeting were (1) a recommendation that UNESCO consider the development of a program on international civic education for 1953-54; and (2) a proposal on ways of increasing citizen discussion of world problems critical to peace and security. The National Conference, based on the Citizen and the United Nations was a major effort of the National Commission in support of the latter proposal.
