English transcription: Quarry at Kartassi. This important quarry, bearing many Greek inscriptions - mostly from the times of Antonius, Marcus Aurelius and Severius - at one time provided the construction materials for the temples of Philae. It is in the shape of an amphitheatre and a niche, with a bust in haut-relief on either side, adds to its character.

Elle est taillée en amphithéâtre et une niche flanquée de deux bustes en haut-relief donne à ce site son caractère de ruine antique.
Description: A façade of the stone quarry of Kartassi. A doorway at the centre of the picture is flanked, at the top, by 2 recessed busts, and at bottom - by several other quite damaged figurines and carvings. The walls of the façade are covered with chiseled - mainly Greek - inscriptions.

French transcription: L'ensemble des temples de Philae est l'oeuvre de plusieurs dynasties, dont la XXXe sous le premier Nectanébo, vers 360 avant J.C. Ils ont été continués par les Ptolémées et achevés pendant l'occupation romaine au Ier et au IIe siècles après J.C. L'ile a été dédiée au culte d'Isis. Sur la photo, le Pavillon de Trajan en partie submergé par la crue du Nil.
Description: Un pavillon à moitié immergé. Il est de forme rectangulaire et entouré de colonnes. Ces dernières sont richement sculptées. Le chapiteau représente un palmier. Derrière, on aperçoit l'autre rive qui est deserte et montagneuse.

Description: Bird's eye view of the Nile front façade of the Great Temple of Abu Simbel prior to its dismantlement and reconstruction - by a UNESCO-led international project - at a higher level so as to accomodate the rising waters of the Aswan Dam. A site management house is at the foot of the temple.
