English transcription: The Acropolis of Athens is in peril. Hallowed shrine of Greek civilization, it remains for western culture, the twofold symbol of a conception of life and of an idea of art. Deterioration is due to a variety of causes: air pollution, dilatation of extraneous materials used during previous restoration work, problems of the stability of the monuments and of the rock platform itself, wear and tear caused by tourists. An International Campaign to save the Acropolis was launched on 10 January 1977 with an appeal by Mr. Amadou-Mahtar M'Bow, Director-General of UNESCO. The task of protection will be long, difficult and complex. But emergency measures must be taken immediately. In particular, the caryatids will be removed from the Erechtheion to the Acropolis Museum for restoration. The casts are being made to replace them. Similar action is under way to protect the three figures on the west fronton of the Parthenon and the frieze of the Athena Nike.
