English transcription: The Hydrological Studies of the Upper Paraguay Basin (PANTANAL) Project was started in 1967 by the United Nations Development Program (with UNESCO as executing agency) assisting the Brasilian National Department of Public Works (DNOS). A sophisticated weather control system, put up in the area, allowed experts to forecast as soon as January 1974 the serious floods that swept Pantanal in April the same year. Thanks to this forecast, the Brazilian authorities were able to warn, in time, the local population thus saving thousands of cattle. Aerial view of the PANTANAL.
French transcription: Le projet d'étude hydrologique du bassin supérieur du Paraguay (PANTANAL) a été lancé en 1967 grâce à une aide allouée au Département National des Travaux Publics du Brésil (DNOS) par le Programme des Nations Unies pour le Développement dont l'UNESCO est l'agent d'exécution. Un système complexe de contrôle de la situation météorologique a été installé dans le PANTANAL. Grâce à lui, les experts ont pu prévoir dès le mois de janvier 1974, les inondations catastrophiques qui frappèrent la région en Avril de la même année.
