Humidity and air pollution are causing paintings and marble to decay; the ecological balance of the lagoon is in danger because of water pollution; more and more flooding in the city and swift currents eat away at the city's foundation. This is why UNESCO has, for its part, launched in 1966 a campaign for the saving of Venice and has participated in a large-scale study of the Venitian problem as a whole. Also, the Italian Government has, amongst other actions, bought the Abbazia della Misericordia as premises for a laboratory and Center for training in the conservation of stone.

UNESCO, on 2 December 1966, launched a campaign for the saving of Venice and has commenced a large-scale study of the Venetian problem as a whole. This 16th century work by Titian (almost completely effaced) was in the Fondaco dei Tedeschi and was removed for preservation in 1967.
