Iron bars which where inserted at the beginning of this century to consolidate monuments, have helped to cause fissures in the marbles through which humidity enters and rusts the metallic supports.

In particular, the caryatids will be removed from the Erechtheion to the Acropolis Museum for restoration. The casts are being made to replace them. Similar action is under way to protect the three figures on the west fronton of the Parthenon and the frieze of the Athena Nike.
