Travelling 1.000 kilometres (600 miles), a car consumes as much oxygen as a human being does in a year, and in addition to lethal carbon monoxide, it emits annually about one kilogramme of lead. Another problem created by the proliferation of motor vehicules is how to dispose of wrecked and worn-out hulks. Increasingly they pile up in hideous cemeteries which blight the countryside as here at Genevilliers.

English transcription: Year by year Venice is slowly falling into decay as it sinks into the mud of its lagoon. Many of the buildings are falling into ruins, simply because they are uninhabited. Venice's heritage is threatened by storms which are causing more and more flooding in the city. Swift currents eat at the city's foundation. Humidity and air pollution are causing paintings and the city's marble to deteriorate. UNESCO, on 2 December 1966, launched a campaign for the saving of Venice and has commenced a large-scale study of the Venetian problem as a whole. Here, a canal polluted by detergents.

The CERN program is concentrated on two big machines, a synchro-cyclotron and a proton-synchrotron, now under construction at the CERN laboratory site near Geneva. The synchro-cyclotron is designed to work at the 600 million electron volts energy level; it consists of a vacuum chamber between the circular roles of a 2,500 tons electro-magnet. Protons are injected in this chamber and accelerated along a spiral path by high frequency electrical forces until they reach speeds approaching 250,000 km. per second. Here, technicians are adjusting the apparatus used to measure and record the magnetic field strength of the synchro-cyclotron.
