The first of these missions visited South East Asia during May to July 1961. It is facing destruction through gradual disintegration. Upon request of the Indonesian Government, UNESCO has sent experts to advise on the restoration and conservation of this important monument and on 12 October 1972, the UNESCO Executive Board authorized the Director-General to sign an agreement with the Indonesian Government for the preservation of this temple. Work in progress.

A la demande du Gouvernement indonésien, des experts furent envoyés sur place par l'UNESCO afin d'y etudier les meilleurs moyens de restauration et de conservation, et le Conseil Exécutif de l'Organisation a autorisé, le 12 Octobre 1972, le Directeur Général à signer avec ce Gouvernement un accord de coopération pour la préservation de ce temple.
