English transcription: Literacy campaign in Ecuador Alphabet matches. Even a matchbox can help to promote literacy. These are used as teaching aids in Ecuador. On each is the picture of an object, its name and the first letter of the name: "e" as in escoba (broom); "l" as in luna (moon), and so on. Thus an illiterate is able to proceed from the image to the word without difficulty.
French transcription: Campagne contre l'analphabétisme en Equateur Les Allumettes de l'alphabet. Un objet d'usage quotidien, la boîte d'allumettes, se révèle un auxiliaire précieux dans les campagnes d'alphabétisation en Equateur. English transcription: Work-oriented Adult Literacy Pilot Project. This project is the result of an agreement between the Government of Ecuador and the United Nations Development Programme. It will be closely co-ordinated with agrarian reform programs and with agricultural, vocational, industrial and handicraft training to demonstrate the impact of functional literacy on economic development. UNESCO has the responsibility for the implementation of this project.

It will be closely co-ordinated with agrarian reform programmes and with agricultural, vocational, industrial and handicraft training to demonstrate the impact of functional literacy on economic development.
