English transcription: The Hydrological Studies of the Upper Paraguay basin (Pantanal) Project was started in 1967 by the United Nations Development Programme (with UNESCO as executing agency) assisting the Brazilian National Department of Public Works (DNOS). A sophisticated weather control system, put up in the area, allowed experts to forecast as soon as January 1974 the serious floods that swept the Pantanal in April the same year. Thanks to this forecast, the Brazilian authorities were able to warn, in time, the local population thus saving thousands of cattle. Zebus in a Pantanal corral.

Un système complexe de contrôle de la situation météorologique a été installé dans le Pantanal. The purpose of the Project is to set up a hydro-meteorological network in the region, and to conduct surveys to investigate the hydraulic system of the Pantanal. At the same time, environmental studies will be carried out, and an attempt will be made to establish a flood forecasting system based on an experimental model. The United Nations Development Programme has concluded an agreement with the Brazilian Government to cooperate in this Project, only in the Brazilian area known as the Pantanal. UNESCO has the responsibility for the implementation of this Project. UNESCO experts are studying the hyrdological conditions of the river in order to regulate its flow.
