New nations are being formed, there is an increasing, world-wide demand for the continent's minerals and raw materials, power resources are being developed, communications opened up by rail, road and sea, and local industries are springing up. Through the new United Nations Economic Commission for Africa the governments are also working together to promote the economy of the continent and to raise living standards. The Gezira is the center of Sudan's cotton economy and the site of one of the world's great irrigation projects. In this photograph a farmer is seen controlling the flow of water to a local garden.

The beginning of censorship This low-relief can be seen on a stele in front of the temple of Knoum, in the wall of the fortress of Kumma. The governor of the fortress had engraved on the stele the story of his battles, his portrait and a eulogy of himself. The pharaoh, fearing the governor's ambition, gave orders to efface the portrait of the governor (left) and the words praising him too highly (at the base of the last column on the left). The Antiquities Service of the Republic of the Sudan will move it to a safe place.
