English transcription: Water pollution an international problem. Rivers and seas carrying along detergents, chemical products and refuse of all kinds, are becoming more and more polluted and, therefore, dangerous for man and aquatic life. Here a sewer which empties directly on to a beach before flowing into the ocean.

English transcription: The Hydrological Studies of the Upper Paraguay Basin (PANTANAL) Project was started in 1967 by the United Nations Development Program (with UNESCO as executing agency) assisting the Brasilian National Department of Public Works (DNOS). A sophisticated weather control system, put up in the area, allowed experts to forecast as soon as January 1974 the serious floods that swept Pantanal in April the same year. Thanks to this forecast, the Brazilian authorities were able to warn, in time, the local population thus saving thousands of cattle. Aerial view of the PANTANAL.
