English transcription: The Hydrological Studies of the Upper Paraguay basin (Pantanal) Project was started in 1967 by the United Nations Development Programme (with UNESCO as executing agency) assisting the Brazilian National Department of Public Works (DNOS). A sophisticated weather control system, put up in the area, allowed experts to forecast as soon as January 1974 the serious floods that swept the Pantanal in April the same year. Thanks to this forecast, the Brazilian authorities were able to warn, in time, the local population thus saving thousands of cattle. Zebus in a Pantanal corral.
