English transcription: School television. An interesting experiment is being carried out in Italy, where a three-year course in vocational training is being broadcast six days a week for boys and girls who have completed their primary education. Subjects include Italian, French, history, geography, science, civic education, religious instruction, practical trades and crafts, and for girls, domestic science. Each year, the students sit for an examination, which gives them the right to enroll for the following year. Shown here: A history class. Two cameras are used, one focused on the teacher and the other on posters. To produce a more realistic effect, the cameras are turned from time to time onto a group of students arranged on the set to give the impression of a real class.

Description: A television camera is trained on a man and three boys seated at a table. The man seems to be reading a text, and the boys to be following the text via paper copies in front of them. A panoramic, elevated Roman cityscape can be seen through the windows of the room.

English transcription: Year by year Venice is slowly falling into decay as it sinks into the mud of its lagoon. Many of the buildings are falling into ruins, simply because they are uninhabited. Venice's heritage is threatened by storms which are causing more and more flooding in the city. Swift currents eat at the city's foundation. Humidity and air pollution are causing paintings and the city's marble to deteriorate. UNESCO, on 2 December 1966, launched a campaign for the saving of Venice and has commenced a large-scale study of the Venetian problem as a whole. Here is the industrial complex of Marghera, just on the mainland.

English transcription: Year by year Venice is slowly falling into decay as it sinks into the mud of its lagoon. Many of the buildings are falling into ruins because of the exodus of its inhabitants. Humidity and air pollution are causing paintings and marble to decay; the ecological balance of the lagoon is in danger because of water pollution; more and more flooding in the city and swift currents eat away at the city's foundation. This is why UNESCO has, for its part, launched in 1966 a campaign for the saving of Venice and has participated in a large-scale study of the Venitian problem as a whole. Also, the Italian Government has, amongst other actions, bought the Abbazia della Misericordia as premises for a laboratory and Center for training in the conservation of stone.

Illiteracy is much more widespread among women than men and the League for struggle against illiteracy is making special effort to attract women to evening classes.
