English transcription: The international campaign for the saving of the Nubian monuments was launched by UNESCO in 1960. Following the construction of the Aswan high dam, the monuments of the island of Philae are permanently flooded to a third of their height and subject to daily fluctuations in water level which eat away their foundations and threaten to bring them down to ruins. In May 1968, it was decided to dismantle and re-erect the monuments on the neighbouring island of Agilkia which is sufficiently elevated to be above the maximum water level. Work in progress on the Temple of Isis.

Work in progress for the reconstruction of the Temple of Isis on its new site at AGILKIA island.

English transcription: The international campaign for the saving of the Nubian monuments, was launched by UNESCO in 1960. Following the construction of the Aswan high dam, the monuments of the island of PHILAE were permanently flooded to a third of their height and subject to daily fluctuations in the water level which ate away their foundations and threatened to bring them down to ruins. In May 1968, it was decided to dismantle and re-erect the monuments on the neighbouring island of AGILKIA which is sufficiently elevated to be above the maximum water level. Description: A phase in the reconstruction of the Philae Temple of Isis on its new site on Agilkia Island. The first pylon has been largely re-erected, but is still partially scaffolded, and is being attended to by a tower crane and its crew. Next to the pylon, stands the also well advanced and colonnaded Mammisi; and to the far right, work has begun on the second pylon. The foreground is dominated by the piles of stones yet to re-employed; and, in the middle, a small mobile crane seems to be trying to escalate the pile.
