A UNESCO specialist in photo-elastic studies has developed research programmes, assessed the equipment needs of the photo-elastic laboratory, and trained the research staff. A navigation research specialist has also been engaged in training activities, and has prepared plans for testing ship models in the experimental navigation tank. Research has been completed on a model reproducing tidal conditions in Cochin Harbour, where shipping has been hampered by silt; and the expert's experiments have proved that by damming one channel, the tide could be directed to carry off this silt. Cochin is now building the dam which is expected to save the equivalent of some $200,000 a year in dredging costs.
