Subfonds contains official and unofficial files, papers, letters, memoranda, manuscripts, maps, illustrations, photographs, etc. of the International Commission for a History of the Scientific and Cultural Development of Mankind as maintained by its Secretariat. The records reflect the preparation, publication, and reception of the six volumes of the History, as well as the publication of the Journal of World History. The original filing plan used by the Secretariat has been respected with only slight modifications. A 1979 accrual which has been added as series 11 is arranged according to filing plan codes where they were used, and then by original order at transfer. Also from the 1979 accrual, a manuscript series has been arranged as series 12. A last series 13 was created for the personal notebooks of the Secretary-General of the Commission, G.S. Métraux. On the file level, most of the items follow a strict chronological order but the copies and drafts have not been completely weeded through. Records date predominantly from 1947 when the General Conference resolved to begin the preparation of the History, to 1969 when the International Commission was dissolved. There are, however, some earlier documents collected by the Secretariat, and some later records added to the files prior to transfer to the Archives.

Le sous-fonds du département de l'information contient l'ensemble des publications officielles de l'IBI, notamment les documents de SPIN et SPIN II, des conférences TDF sur les flux transfrontères de données, la lettre de diffusion de l'IBI "IBI newsletter", le périodique trimestriel AGORA, ou encore des documents de l'Assemblée générale et du conseil d'administration. D'autres publications officielles de l'IBI figurent dans la série des publications.

Une sous-série intitulée "Histoire de l'IBI", nom tel qu'il apparaissait dans le carton versé par l'IBI, se présente sous la forme d'un ensemble de documents relatifs à différentes périodes de l'histoire de l'organisation, sa création, ou sa politique.

La série des enregistrements audiovisuels contient des productions sonores relatives aux sessions de l'assemblée générale et du conseil d'administration de l'IBI, des réunions et évènements organisés par l'IBI, comme SPIN, TDF et le groupe de Yamoussoukro.

Ce sous-fonds contient principalement les courriers au départ, ainsi que les correspondances originales, lettres ou telexs, en départ ou en arrivée, de l'IBI. L'ensemble apparait lacunaire pour chaque sous-série : les courriers originaux sont absents pour la période antérieure au dernier trimestre 1982. Par la suite, l'ensemble est relativement complet et homogène, jusqu'au premier trimestre 1988. La sous-série des courriers au départ demeure plus fragmentée et partielle. On ne dispose d'aucune correspondance avant 1983. Les dossiers de correspondance sont complets pour la période allant de 1985 à 1988. Enfin, on dispose de quelques dossiers de telexs, en arrivée ou au départ, pour les années 1986 et 1987.
