Scope and content

Series primarily consists of legal instruments signed between UNESCO and member states, including state agencies and corporations. Instruments include co-operation agreements, host-country agreements, funds-in-trust agreements and plans of operation. UNESCO agreements signed with local governments are also filed in this series. The series also contains agreements signed between UNESCO and international, regional or other multilateral organizations as well as all multilateral conventions and recommendations adopted by the General Conference or other intergovernmental conferences which designated UNESCO as a depository. United Nations University (UNU), University for Peace (UPEACE) and World Maritime University (WMU) agreements are filed in this series, but other agreements signed with universities, including state universities, can be found in series B. UNITWIN agreements may be filed in this series or series B. Instruments are given a reference code and registered upon receipt in the Archives and are therefore in rough chronological order.

Note

Arrangement note: The researcher can see the UNESCO Archives staff’s work in the arrangement of the collection and the choice of supplied titles. That is to say that the staff’s decision to register an instrument in a certain way can have an effect on the understanding of how the material accumulated. An example of this is the staff’s decision on whether to register one physical object under two different subseries – see examples in subseries A/221 and A/222 where, with one letter, a member state has ratified both the Protocol creating a Commission of conciliation and good offices as well as the Convention concerning the fight against discrimination in the field of education itself. Archives staff have in some of these cases placed a photocopy of the original letter in one of the subseries, or have left a note card referencing the location of the original.

Note

Archives staff sometimes registered long, descriptive titles so that, for some questions, the registers themselves could be referred to without the need to consult the instrument.
