The Kathmandu medal has been created by Mr. Max Leognany (Paris) based upon a design by A. Chitrakar (Nepal). The obverse illustrates the head of Shiva-Linga (5th Century A.D.) symbolising the influence of Hinduism. The reverse shows the influence of buddhism by reproducing the monumental complex of Swayambhu Stupa and carries the inscription KATHMANDU- UNESCO 1979).

English transcription: Jacob Roggeveen, a Dutchman who discovered this island and its gigantic statues, wrote "We were filled with astonishment by these stone figures, and we could not understand how a people, deprived of stout spars and ropes, could have raised them upright. A good 300 statues may once have dotted the island but many, carved in soft stone, have disappeared. Some are over 30 feet high. Their purpose and the method used to transport them are still shrouded in mystery".

The obverse presents in the centre of a geometrical design of the sun the Intihuatana or sundial stone the place to which the sun is tied.
