UNESCO sent a team from its scientific and technological department to the Institut für Meereskunde (Marine Science Institute) at KIEL to get acquainted with the work being done in the Baltic sea. Minute sea animals were painstakingly drawn by hand in the account of the pioneer expedition of the German steamer National from 1889 to 1892 which was led by Victor Hensen.
