Minute sea animals were painstakingly drawn by hand in the account of the pioneer expedition of the German steamer National from 1889 to 1892 which was led by Victor Hensen.

Experimental borings have released high pressure jets of water at a temperature of 60 C which is already being used in the irrigation channels of the region.
